Reading: This week is Read Across America week so we will be reading Dr. Seuss books that go with our school wide theme days. We will complete corresponding reading activities that meet second grade standards. For example:

Grammar: I can use adjectives and adverbs and choose between them depending on what is being modified. Math: I can add and subtract within 1000 using base ten blocks! Science: I can identify and communicate information about how weather, plants, animals, and humans cause changes to the environment. Because it’s Read Across American week, we will look at how the Lorax fights to protect the Truffula trees in Thneedville. AcadeMics:Phonics: We are working on spelling and decoding words with silent letters. We are working on the following patterns: kn, gn, wr, mb, ph, and gh. Reading: We are continue to cover fairy tales, fables, legends, and folktales! Stories about Anansi, the trickster spider, are one of the most common folktales. Stories about Anansi are great for teaching students to identify the moral or lesson of a story. Grammar: We are continuing to work on shades of meaning with adjectives and verbs. Some words have a stronger meaning than others. For example, toss, throw, and hurl! After shades of meaning, we will be moving onto adverbs. Math: Students will be adding and subtracting within 1000, using concrete models or drawings. This means we will primarily be using base ten blocks to add and subtract three digit numbers for the next couple weeks. Social Studies: We will continue to learn about Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts of America. Upcoming Dates:

This week’s pattern will be words with er, ir, and ur. Spelling lists go home on Mondays. Reading: We are continuing to read different fairy tales, fables, and legends. We will recount stories and determine their central message, lesson, or moral. Students will compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (ex: Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures. Writing: Students will write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, and provide a concluding statement. We will continue to strengthen our writing by revising and editing with guidance from adults and peers. Math: We will continue adding and subtract 10 or 100 to a numbers up to 1,000. Then we will move on to adding 4 two-digit numbers. Students will do this by looking for facts they know in each column (doubles facts, making 10 facts, etc.) Social Studies: We will be looking at the life of Jackie Robinson and his contributions to the Civil Rights movements. Academics: Phonics: I can read & spell reflexive pronouns. Reading: I can describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text. Students are identifying the main idea ofa passage & facts that support it. Writing: I can write a lab report. We are reinforcing what students learned about writing lab reports in STEM class. Students gathered materials, hypothesized, observed melting candy canes, recorded data, and wrote a conclusion. Math: I can choose the correct measuring tool & measure an object with several different units (in vs. cm). I can compare & estimate lengths also. SS: I can describe force & motion in terms of pushes & pulls. Students will learn how speed and direction are changed by pushes and pulls through planning and carrying out investigations.
