Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a restful, fun, family-filled holiday break! I spent time with my husband, parents, and brother's family in Savannah, GA. I cruised in the golf cart, admired sunsets, and oooh-ed & ahhh-ed at my cute six month old nephew. I look forward to hearing all about your adventures at Monday's morning meeting. In addition to reading about this week below, please be sure to check out the previous blog post about what's to come in Q3. Academics: Phonics: We are beginning with R-controlled words. This week’s pattern will be words with “ar” such as far, start, sharp, yard, march, etc. Reading: We are kicking off this quarter by reading fairy tales, fables, and legends. We will recount stories and determine their central message, lesson, or moral. Writing: Students will write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, and provide a concluding statement. We will continue to strengthen our writing by revising and editing with guidance from adults and peers. Math: To prepare us for adding to 1,000, we’ll review mental addition and subtraction strategies such as making 10, double facts, near doubles facts (doubles +1), counting on, and fact families. Social Studies: With the MLK Jr. Holiday coming up, we will start this quarter by learning about the life and contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr and his impact during the civil rights movement.
