Students are learning to write lab reports. Today we did an experiment with candy pumpkins. We asked, in which liquid the pumpkin would dissolve and/or sink? We made predictions, materials lists, and wrote our procedural steps. Here's what happened when we dropped a candy pumpkin into white vinegar, 2% milk, water, and canola oil. We will document our observations tomorrow & write our conclusions. EWW!

Per Ms. Sydney Jones (one of our school counselors)...
"For Thanksgiving this year we are going to provide baskets for Frey Families in need. I have attached a list of what will go in each basket/box." Reminders: Scholastic orders due 10/26 & Frey-Day on a Saturday day is 10/27. 5 house points will be awarded to all students who attend Frey-Day on a Saturday. Let's take a look back at the week of 10/22 and then look at what's coming up during the week of 10/29. We started reading nonfiction texts! It's important to acknowledge & identify text features because they help us better understand a text. Students made their own amazing anchor charts to refer to! We got to meet Nala from the mobile dairy farm! We learned about the process of milking cows and pasteurizing milk! We are studying addition and subtraction strategies such as counting on & counting back using number lines, fact families, doubles facts (4+4), near doubles facts (4+5), and flip-flop facts (4+5=5+4) and making ten facts (2+8=10, 3+7=10, etc.)
As a grade level we are doing fall centers on Wednesday 10/31. My room will be for "Flavorful Fact Families." If you're able to donate some candy corn, we would love a festive snack to munch on while we work! Also on 10/31, students may donate to the Rally Foundation and wear a costume. Frey will not allow weapons or masks.
Next Thursday (11/1) student will take an assessment on stars. We are not learning about constellations or moon phases at this time. We are focused on attributes of stars- temperature/color, size, brightness, etc. It's important for students to recognize that, although the sun appears to be the biggest star in the solar system, it's not! It's just the closest to Earth which make it look like the biggest & brightest star. During the week of 10/29 we will be learning the spelling pattern oo! Here's a book on GetEpic that you should check out for more practice with -oo words: https://www.getepic.com/app/read/5556 .
In our class we use a Dojo Club. For each 25 dojo points earned, a students gets to sign a poster in the classroom & is rewarded for their efforts! Watch the slideshow below to see what the quarter 2 prizes are! Stay tuned for awesome behavior! This week's spelling pattern is long i- specifically ie and igh!
Reflexive Pronouns: himself, herself, yourself, myself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves. We will be covering these 6 addition strategies. While many students are pretty fluent with their math facts to 20, these are still important strategies. It will help students to look for doubles facts, making ten facts, etc. when they're solving 3 digit addition and subtraction problems with regrouping. Students will have these in the resource pocket of their binders. :)
