Phonics/Spelling- We are continuing to work on open and closed syllable words. Open vowels make the long vowel sound. Closed syllables have a consonant on either side and make a short vowel sound. Some words can have both an open & close syllable. For example, pilot. “Pi” is open and “lot” is closed. This can be a tricky concept for kids. Reading- We are moving on from story structure, but we will revisit it throughout the year. Next we will work on answering and generating questions about a text. These questions will be centered around the 5 W’s: who, what, where, when, & why. It’s typically easier for students to answer questions rather than write their own. At home, you can ask them to generate meaningful questions about books you read together. Writing- We will continue to work on writing personal narratives that magnify or zoom in on one small moment. We are crafting powerful endings and learning to “hook” readers with catchy openings. In grammar, we will continue to focus on the components of a complete sentence- noun & verb. We will start by simply identifying whether a sentence is complete or incomplete. Then, we'll move onto identifying the subject and predicate. Math- We will begin with skip counting by 10 and 100 up to 1,000. Students are used to skip counting beginning at 0. For example… 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, etc. We will take it a few steps further in second grade. They will be challenged to count by 10s from various starting points. For example…. 256, 266, 276, 286, 296, 306, etc. We will also work on word problems that include skip counting. Homework key below... Social Studies- We will wrap up Georgia regions/rivers and map skills soon! We will be moving on to science as we learn about states of matter and describing physical attributes. Homework key below... *Coming Up*

Hello families, Homework begins this week. You should have received the packet in your child's binder on Friday. The front cover provides a guideline of what to complete each night. I will check it at the end of each day for completion. Students who did the homework the previous night will receive a positive Dojo point. There will not be a penalty for incomplete homework because I understand that people have sports, church, or other events that come up. However, if the homework is routinely incomplete, I will reach out to discuss this. My intention is not to overwork the kiddos at home, but to provide some practice & an opportunity for you to see their successes and possible struggles. Here's what we'll be learning about this week in each subject area: Reading: We will continue to work on identifying story elements: characters, solution, problem, solution, beginning, middle, and end. When you’re reading at home here are some comprehension questions to ask your child…
Writing: We will continue to zoom in on special memories & choose a small moment or tiny topic to write about. In grammar, we will focus on the components of a complete sentence- noun & verb. We will start by simply identifying whether a sentence is complete or incomplete. Spelling: We will start spelling by working on magic E or silent E words. These words have a long vowel sound + a silent E. Here are some examples: tape, cube, cone, dice. We will look at how the vowel sound changes when an E is added at the end of the word. Math: We will continue to work on writing the different forms of a number: standard, expanded, base ten, and word form. We will also start to help students understand that 12 tens is the same as 120 or 13 tens is the same as 130. Social Studies: Students will be able to identify the 5 regions of Georgia and the three main rivers.
Project backpack is a needs based food donation program provided by Due West Methodist Church. This program is designed to offer food to our students whose families have difficulty providing food on the weekends. Backpacks of food for the weekend are distributed here at school on Fridays.
Project backpack forms for the 2019-2020 school year are coming home on Monday August 12, 2019. We did a cactus themed "escape room" activity that taught is to stick together this year! We will continue to review rules, expectations, and procedures. However, we're jumping into the curriculum. Here's what's coming up during the week of Aug. 5-9… Reading- We will be going over the format and expectations of Reader’s Workshop. Reader’s Workshop consists of a mini-lesson, independent reading time, and student-teacher conferences or small group instruction. We will also begin covering story elements such as characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. Writing- We will introduce Writer’s Workshop to the students. Writer’s Workshop consists of a mini-lesson, independent writing time, and student-teacher conferences or small group instruction. Our first unit is narrative writing. We will kick off the year by encouraging students to brainstorm and write about small moments. Math- Our first unit is about place value. This week we’ll learn about several ways to write a number: standard form, base ten form, expanded form, word form, and possibly even money form! Social Studies- We will launch social studies by examining the “story of our state” using 4 different domains. We will introduce four hats which are used to represent the different domains in social studies: history, geography, government/civics, and economics. We will refer back to these hats/domains throughout the year. Homework & spelling will start the week of August 12th
